Church Membership
about Church Membership
Members of the Church of Christ are not just names on a list. Members make up the core of the church committed to discipleship lived out in community. Members here are devoted “to the fellowship” - to a specific local body as described in Acts 2:42. They are Christ-followers who have been willing to join in on the cause of the local church, and say, “I’m in!” “Church membership” and “church involvement” are synonymous.
The initial requirements for membership at the church are fairly simple:
1) Profession of faith. This is to simply determine with a reasonable degree of certainty that you have genuinely given your life to Jesus Christ, and that you are in reasonable agreement with the church’s statement of faith. This can be done in a number of ways. You may choose to:
-
Share your faith publicly during a worship service. You can share a brief version of how you came to faith, or simply answer a couple of basic questions concerning your faith in Christ.
-
Schedule a brief interview with two or three leaders of the church - the Senior Pastor, the Youth Director, or any of the elders. This option may serve those well who, for any reason, rather not talk in front of a crowd of people.
-
Deliver a letter of intent to the church office. In this letter you can briefly describe your faith journey. This option is good particularly if you have already testified publicly in another setting.
2) Baptism by immersion. Again, this could be done publicly on a Sunday morning, or semi-privately with a small group of friends and/or family. If you have already been baptized at a previous date, you would not be required to be re-baptized just for membership in this church. Simply indicate this in your profession of faith.
